What are wallet carriers and how to activate them

Overview

Wallet carriers are pre-connected carrier accounts provided by ShipStation and available to all Calcurates users out of the box. Unlike standard carrier connections, wallet carriers do not require you to have your own carrier account or a ShipStation subscription — they are ready to use directly from your Calcurates account.

Wallet carriers appear in your carrier list with the suffix "by ShipStation" (e.g., UPS by ShipStation, FedEx by ShipStation) to distinguish them from your own connected carrier accounts.

AlertNote: Wallet carriers cannot be disconnected. The "Disconnect" option is not available for these carriers, however you can deactivate them.

When you should use wallet carriers

Wallet carriers are a good fit in the following scenarios:

  • You use ShipStation to create shipping labels and want to display ShipStation's discounted carrier rates at checkout — so customers see the same competitive rates you benefit from when purchasing labels.
  • You don't have your own carrier accounts but still want to offer live, real-time carrier rates at checkout without going through a separate carrier registration process.

Configuration steps

Activating and deactivating a wallet carrier

Wallet carriers are managed from Menu > Shipping Options > Manage Carriers > Wallet Accounts

Each wallet carrier has an Activate/Deactivate action. To activate a carrier, click the "Activate" button. To deactivate it click the "Deactivate" icon.

WarningImportant: When you deactivate a wallet carrier, all Shipping Options linked to that carrier will be automatically removed. Make sure to review your active Shipping Options before deactivating.

Syncing services and packages

After activating a wallet carrier, sync its services and packages to make them available for configuration. Some wallet carriers may include carrier-specific package types.

Creating a Shipping Option

Once the carrier is active and its services are synced, the next step is to create a Shipping Option to display rates at checkout.
